Fortress of Brancion

Situated on the northernmost pass of the Mâconnais Mountains, the fortress occupied a strategic position, and it was in the 9th century that the Gros de Brancion family settled there.
The castellany was ceded in the 12th century to the Duke of Burgundy, who established a full-fledged hamlet around the castle.
The castle’s ruins, including those of the ramparts and the city gate, are listed as historic monuments.
Visitors may explore the castle on their own or take a self-guided tour.
