Cluny is a Benedictine abbey that was founded in 910 by William the Pious and, from that time on, enjoyed the protection of Rome. The abbey was built in several phases, known as Cluny I, Cluny II, and Cluny III. Cluny became a renowned center of both culture and spirituality. However, beginning in the 12th century, financial difficulties led to a decline that
continued to worsen. It was sold as “national property” in 1798, and its demolition began shortly thereafter.
The famous Cluny stud farm was founded in 1807 by Napoleon I; over time, it expanded, and its equine population became very diverse. In 2003, it was designated a national stud farm. Numerous events, particularly during the summer, are held there.
