The abbey was built in several phases, known as Cluny I, Cluny II, and Cluny III. Cluny became a renowned center of both culture and spirituality. However, beginning in the 12th century, financial difficulties led to a decline that<br\/>continued to worsen. It was sold as \u201cnational property\u201d in 1798, and its demolition began shortly thereafter.<br\/>The famous Cluny stud farm was founded in 1807 by Napoleon I; over time, it expanded, and its equine population became very diverse. In 2003, it was designated a national stud farm.
